How STEAM Affects the Culinary World

STEAM enriches our world in more ways than we can count. One exciting and delicious, industry STEAM impacts significantly is the culinary world.

Food scientists use technology and innovations to improve methods of

  • preservation
  • nutrition
  • sustainability
  • quality control
  • safety

One example of that is something you have in your house right now… a refrigerator! Can you imagine a successful restaurant without storing their foods in refrigerators or freezers? The use of low temperatures extends the shelf life of ingredients and maintains the quality of these ingredients for use in dishes you eat everyday.

Have you ever baked a cake? If so, you know that it is really important to get the exact measurements of ingredients right. Math also plays an important role in developing recipes to make sure the right calculations are made that will make the cake taste correctly and be presented beautifully. Repeating that recipe correctly every time is another key to a successful restaurant. Therefore, it’s important to get the measurements just right and record them for others to use.

 

A Tasting of Food Science

A career path in food science could lead you into working in a restaurant, enhancing food-packaging procedures, or even creating new flavors for Ben & Jerry’s ice cream! Flavor Gurus, as Ben & Jerry’s calls them carefully craft flavors like Cherry Garcia® or Chunky Monkey® by analyzing trends, manufacturing ingredients, and using new technology.

STEAM impacts the culinary world through theses ways and many more. STEAM will continue to develop this industry through its advancements, and I’m excited to see how this affects my favorite dishes in the future!
